I know it can be intimidating to say that learning needs to change. Or that we need new strategies. There is enough change in all of our lives; can’t something remain the same?
Sorry, not learning. The tectonic shifts that have occurred as a result of digital transformation bring some great advantages, like that phone that we take for granted today. We have adapted to having information and knowledge at our fingertips. We know how to get answers quickly. We are used to obtaining what we need when we need it. That changes not only how we learn, but the way we learn and the depth of knowledge that we accept.
Several years ago, we talked about how this applied to the younger generation, but now it is all of us.
Given that foundation, I know most of us in learning want to accept digital learning or modern learning. But, doesn’t digital mean tech? But where and how do we start? We are busier than ever. Its not like you can just flip a switch, or is it?
Start with whatever platform you have and adapt. While it is not ideal, the key point is to set up solutions that will resonate with users and respond to business needs. Let’s assume that you have done all the performance consulting and the need is there for a “course” in Subject A, as an example. Stop and take a step back and look at what you can do to build a set (or path) of digital assets to fill the need.
These assets can vary greatly. Is there a subject matter expert who can provide the technical content? Is there a leader who can introduce the subject? Are there resources that exist internally and/or externally? Can the knowledge be chunked up into levels or logical breaks? Do you have synchronous content from classes that you can repurpose? (note that I did not say convert!)
Build a path with a blend of assets. Work with champions to help create some. Use one of the cool new rapid development tools to create an animated video or explainer video. Mix modalities and content types to keep it interesting. And, keep it short.
Do this for one idea.
Pick something needed quickly. Select and coach user generated content. Then market it. Tell people what you have done and get feedback. Be sure to work with managers to help them to roll out the topic to their teams by providing discussion guides.
You can do this on a small scale. Just like any other learning, practice. Next thing you know, you will be designing for digital.
